\r\n The Name Br\u010dko<\/span>\r\n <\/h2>\r\n \r\n
There is an interesting tradition about how the town of Br\u010dko got its name. In addition to the present-day name Br\u010dko, three other names have been mentioned in written sources: Barkaz, Br\u010dki and Br\u010dka. Barkaz appeared in the first written source, the Charter of the Hungarian King Sigismund from 1422. Besides the official name, the same variant was also mentioned in 1725 (BERCZKO), as well as in the works of Filip Vi\u0161nji\u0107, who was originally from nearby Bijeljina, and whose usage was later recorded by Vuk Karad\u017ei\u0107 in his dictionary. The name \u201cBr\u010dki\u201d was mentioned at the beginning of the 17th century and was just as widespread as \u201cBr\u010dko.\u201d<\/div>\r\n \r\n \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Written sources indicate that both forms frequently appeared, which is confirmed by entries in the dictionary of the Yugoslav Academy, where there are also remarks that an incorrect feminine form, \u201cBr\u010dka,\u201d was sometimes used. However, in the Chronicle of the Br\u010dko Parish, compiled by the archpriest and parish priest Rajko Sofrenovi\u0107, this form is not considered incorrect. On the contrary, it is often cited in old documents. One example mentioned there is a map by Gerhard Mercator, on which the name \u201cBarka\u201d appears. This name corresponds to the original settlement known as \u201cPalanka.\u201d<\/div>\r\n \r\n \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

During the Austro-Hungarian administration in 1878, the feminine form of the name was the official one, specifically \u201cNovi Br\u010dka.\u201d A particularly interesting folk interpretation of the name is also mentioned in the Chronicle. On the bank of the Sava River, east of Br\u010dko, near today\u2019s village Brezovo Polje, there are ruins known among locals as \u201cNaki\u0107\u2019s Tower.\u201d According to tradition, these ruins once belonged to the castle of the wealthy and powerful Beg Naki\u0107, while at the site of present-day Br\u010dko there was only a ferry crossing.<\/div>\r\n \r\n \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The ferryman had a beautiful daughter with whom Beg Naki\u0107 fell in love. From his tower he would often watch her through a spyglass as she bathed in the Sava River. Whenever he spotted her, he would joyfully exclaim: \u201cThere she is, splashing!\u201d (\u201cEno je, br\u010dka!\u201d). According to the story, the people began calling the place where the girl bathed \u201cBr\u010dka,\u201d and later this name was transferred to the town that developed there. Br\u010dko was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1852. Most likely, the town was originally founded by the Ottomans as \u201cPalanka,\u201d that is, a military and police outpost established to protect the Sava River waterway. The Br\u010dko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina is geographically located in the north-eastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the right bank of the Sava River. It lies at the meeting point of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia and represents an important crossroads of national and international routes running from east to west and from north to south. The District covers an area of 493.3 km\u00b2, which represents less than 1% of the total area of Bosnia and Herzegovina (51,129 km\u00b2), while the central urban area covers 183 km\u00b2. With such a position, Br\u010dko has a favourable tourism and geographical location, connecting Bosnia and Herzegovina with western and south-eastern Europe as well as the Danube region. As an important junction of major transport routes in the east\u2013west and north\u2013south directions, Br\u010dko represents a multimodal transport hub in Bosnia and Herzegovina, combining road, river and railway transport. Through these connections, the District has access to Croatia and Central Europe, while the navigable Sava River further connects it to the Danube and onward to both Western and Eastern Europe. The spatial position of Br\u010dko therefore determines the connectivity of its wider hinterland and gravitational area with other regions of Central and Eastern Europe.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The city of Br\u010dko is located only 30 kilometres from the international transport route of the Pan-European Corridor X (the Belgrade\u2013Zagreb motorway). This motorway (E70) runs from Salzburg in Austria to Thessaloniki in Greece and is characterized by heavy traffic throughout the year, transporting a significant number of passengers and enabling good connectivity between the Br\u010dko District and major tourism-generating markets. The Br\u010dko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina lies on a navigable section of the Sava River, and the Port of Br\u010dko is the largest river port in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The working quay of the port is 150 metres long and has an average width of 15 metres. Within the territory of the Br\u010dko District, the Sava River is navigable over a distance of 44 kilometres. Vessels with a draught of up to 2.5 metres can navigate the river for around 260 days per year, while during periods of low water levels it remains navigable for vessels with a smaller draught. Through the Sava River, the Br\u010dko District is connected to the Danube, which further links it with the rest of Europe, the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, while through the Black Sea it is connected to the Mediterranean. The Port of Br\u010dko has traditionally served as a transhipment port for bulk cargo and does not have a passenger terminal. However, each year an increasing number of cruise ships enter the Br\u010dko District, creating opportunities for the development of river cruise and nautical tourism. The port represents an important infrastructure facility that could significantly improve transport accessibility and further stimulate tourism development in the Br\u010dko District, particularly in light of plans to extend the navigability of the Sava River to Bre\u017eice in Slovenia, which would increase the navigable waterway by approximately 100 kilometres.<\/p>

Many customs inherited from these periods have been preserved to this day through the work of cultural and artistic associations, organizations and institutions active in the field of culture.<\/p>

Cultural and historical heritage is an essential part of the identity of a particular area, but in modern systems it is also recognized as a powerful driver of economic development and tourism. Culture, understood in its broadest sense, today represents an important component of tourism in many developed countries.<\/p>

Experts believe that the future of tourism in the upcoming period will increasingly rely on offers based on all segments of culture, as what is authentic, original and unique always represents a strong attraction.
