In the very center of Brčko, at the Square of Youth (Trg Mladih), stands a monument dedicated to the martyrs and fallen soldiers of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ARBiH), who gave their lives during the wartime events in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This monument serves as a permanent remembrance of the Bosniak soldiers from the Brčko District area.
Construction of the monument began on May 16, 2010, and was completed on May 17, 2012. The idea and realization came from the citizens’ association “Lest We Forget” (Da se ne zaboravi), which, with the consent of the Managing Board and in accordance with the Law on Monuments and Symbols of the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina, agreed on its location and purpose. Funding for the construction was provided from the budget of the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with symbolic contributions from citizens through voluntary donations.
The author of the monument is Adnan Begović, a graduated civil engineer. With its shape and symbolism, the monument represents more than just a memorial—it carries a powerful message of identity, remembrance, and gratitude.
The conceptual interpretation of the monument is based on symbols of statehood and resistance. At the center is the motif of the Bosnian lily. The five massive stone slabs that make up the monument represent five combat battalions and are designed so that they “have a face on all sides.”
