Memorial to the Defenders of the HVO

The Memorial to the Defenders of the HVO, dedicated to the members of the 108th Infantry Brigade of the Croatian Defence Council (HVO), commemorates the defenders who lost their lives in the Brčko area. It was built in 2011 and officially inaugurated in 2012. The monument was erected by members of the HVO association from Brčko, with financial support from the Government of Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The author of the monument is academic sculptor Anto Jurkić.

The conceptual design of the monument is based on three main architectural elements: the triangle, the square and the circle, symbolising the Christian Trinity – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit – as the foundation of the faith of the Croatian people.

The portal of the monument symbolises the transition into another dimension, while the sphere represents eternity and perfection, and the openings within the sphere form a circle – a symbol of suffering, but also of resurrection. The ends of these openings are finished with glass cubes, which allude to elements of the historical Croatian coat of arms.

This monument is a lasting tribute to the fallen members of the 108th Brigade, expressing deep respect, encouraging reflection and conveying a timeless message. With its simple form, it symbolises Croatian identity and tradition, while also promoting the idea of tolerance and a shared future of the three peoples who live in this area.
