To the Serbian Defenders of Brčko

This monument in Brčko testifies to the continuity of the statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also to the uniqueness of the Brčko District as a multiethnic community. At the same time, it serves as both a warning and a vow – not to forget.

The monument “To the Serbian Defenders of Brčko” was erected in 1997 in the square in front of the Municipality building in Brčko, in the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is dedicated to the soldiers of the Army of the Republika Srpska (VRS) – both the fallen and the survivors – who participated in the defense of this city during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Locally, it is often referred to as the “Monument to the Serbian Liberators of Brčko.”

The monument was built in 1997 on the square in front of the Municipal building in Brčko. It was erected by the Veterans’ Organization of Republika Srpska (BORS) with the support of local authorities, and the monument’s author is academic sculptor Miodrag Živković from Belgrade.

This monument is dedicated to the soldiers of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) from the Brčko area, both those who fell and those who survived, in memory of their role in the defensive-patriotic war from 1992 to 1995.

The inscription on the monument reads: “To the Serbian Defenders of Brčko.” Due to its size and location, the monument has become a significant gathering place and site for commemorations, especially during the marking of important dates such as the patron saint’s day of the Army of Republika Srpska and the Day of Republika Srpska.

The monument symbolizes remembrance of the sacrifices and contributions of Serbian fighters in the defense of Brčko during the war, and represents an important element of the culture of remembrance in this city.
