Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a unique and specific unit of local self-government in the country, has existed since 8 March 2000.. This date is celebrated as Brčko District Day, marking the existence of the District as a socio-political community guided by genuine European values and recognised as an example of multiculturalism and multiethnicity, not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina but also in the wider region.

The celebration has a cultural and sporting character and takes place throughout the month of March. During this period, citizens of Brčko and all visitors can enjoy a rich and diverse programme of cultural and sports events that nurture the culture, traditions and languages of the three constituent peoples living in the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

As International Women’s Day is marked on the same date, the occasion is also traditionally used to pay special tribute to the citizens of the District.
