Gradaščević tower

Gradaščević Tower is a residential and fortification building from the Ottoman period. The tower with courtyard and courtyard walls is located in the settlement of Bijela, on the slopes of Majevica. It is assumed that the tower was built by Osman Pasha Gradaščević, towards the end 18. and beginning 19th century.

The tower consists of the main residential and fortification building – the tower, summer kitchen, two wells and walls around the courtyard. The height of the tower to the lower eaves is about 17.50 meters, and to the top of the roof about 23 meters. The tower is covered with pepper tiles. In the middle of the roof is a mast-spike. Both eaves have decorative edge boards and eaves framing on the underside. A fireplace chimney was led from the lower roof. The room on the upper floor under the final vault or cemera is called cemerodaja.

The tower in Bijela differs from similar towers because the floor above the chamber is not a chatma, but has stone walls, 70 cm thick, while the ground floor is 152 cm thick. There is a wall around the spacious courtyard, and on the southern part of the wall is the entrance gate, as the only opening in the wall. The wall is, on the inside, about 2.50 m high, while on the outside it is of variable height. It is built of hewn crushed stone and covered with a wooden roof, above which is a pepper tile. The fence wall is built with two faces in lime mortar, 130 cm thick, plastered on both sides.

The Gradaščević tower was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
